Less than a month to the 17th Plenary Assembly of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), preparations are underway to bring together over 100 delegates in Angola’s capital, Luanda.

“A special Visa will be provided to you by ANGOLA, so there is no need to go to any Angolan Embassy to apply for visa,” the Local Organizing Team in Angola has notified the invited participants at the meeting scheduled to begin on July 18 with arrivals.
African participants have been required to avail soft copies of their current passports and to complete an online form to enable the local organizers “have the needful information for the success of the Plenary Assembly.”
The theme of the Plenary is “The family in Africa, yesterday, today, and tomorrow: in the light of the gospel.”
According to the provisional program emailed to invited participants, members of SECAM Standing Committee will meet on Monday, July 18, ahead of the plenary scheduled to officially open with the celebration of Holy Eucharist at the Holy Family Parish in Luanda, beginning from 9 a.m.
SECAM President, Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi of Lubango, Angola, has been scheduled to moderate the very first session of the plenary, during which goodwill and solidarity messages from relevant Church authorities and partners will be presented, including the opening address from him.
The afternoon of the first day of the plenary will see the beginning of a three-day workshop on a number of topics.
New pastoral challenges facing the African family today and finding new ways of evangelizing the families, the influence of modern media and new ideologies on the family in Africa today, and making SECAM stronger and more committed family of God on our continent, are among the topics lined up for presentation and discussion during the three workshop days.
A review of the Acts of the 16th SECAM Plenary Assembly held in the Democratic Republic of Congo in July 2013, and the presentation of the minutes of that Kinshasa Plenary, have been slated for Friday, July 22 morning.
Reports from the commissions, departments, and desks of SECAM and regional bishops’ conferences, interventions from invited organizations, plenary resolutions, as well as recommendations and a communique are among the other activities scheduled for the remaining days of the plenary.
The theme, date, and venue of the 18th Plenary of SECAM are expected to be announced on the evening of July 23.
The 17th Plenary of SECAM  is scheduled to officially close on July 24 with the celebration of Holy Eucharist expected to begin at 9 a.m. local time.
Organized visits around the city of Luanda by Plenary participants and a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Angola by “a Select Group of Bishops” have been proposed for June 24 and June 25 respectively.
Launched officially in 1969 by Pope Paul VI in Uganda during the first-ever visit of a Pope to Africa, SECAM will be 50 years old in 2019.
